Buenos Aires, Argentina - So... Whatever Happened With The Final Test? |

Wednesday, August 9, 2006 I won't keep you in suspense - we are engaged! Michael proposed this morning with a pair of gorgeous crocheted silver earrings. (So that's what he was buying the other day in San Telmo when he freaked out and told me to go away!) Michael and I have been together about five years now. We've had dozens of conversations about marriage and child-rearing and joint banking and city v. suburbs over the past year and I'm certainly not surprised that we're taking this step. In fact he had taken to asking me at random times, "If I were to propose to you, what would you say?" and I would always answer, "Are you going to propose to me?" and he'd get all frustrated. But he must have known I'd say yes because we always talked about "when we're married" like it was a given. But we both still managed to blush and giggle and tear up and be incredibly nervous about the whole thing when it finally happened. Michael was so nervous that he kept talking after he'd asked and didn't even notice that I said yes. He had to stop and check back with me to make sure. Of course I said yes! It was all really sweet and funny and will be one of those shining memories for my whole life. After we were all confirmed that we were actually engaged, we had a great time spilling out all the behind-the-scenes ("I knew you were buying something but I didn't know what!" "My sister's been bugging me for days, 'did you ask her yet?'") And then we kept going back over it, even though it had just happened. I guess we were trying to let it sink in. Michael says there is a diamond waiting for us in Charlotte. We have his very generous mother, who got it from her mother's sister, to thank for that. So it's an heirloom diamond, which is a nice welcome to the family and also skirts that pesky blood diamonds issue. We will have it set when we get home. And I learned I have Tom from Australia to thank for the fact that the proposal happened now. Michael revealed that while the two of them were out drinking at the Joy Ride Café in Sucre, Tom gave Michael the "what are you waiting for, mate?" speech and Michael thought, "Hmm. What am I waiting for?" And now we're engaged. So cheers, Tommo! I owe you one. Naturally I'm thrilled. I don't know what else to say about it. It's so strange to think how the twists and turns of my life have led me through so many weird back alleys to suddenly emerge into this happiness. Michael is an amazing person and I am so happy that we're always going to be travel partners. But it's not a surprise that he's so great, given that he comes from such a nice family, and I'm also happy that I get them in the bargain. I'm just happy all around, basically. So we spent the day frolicking around Buenos Aires and being engaged. It was nice. Very, very nice. 19 comments so far | Post a comment

I knew what happened because of course I looked at Michael's blog too - but of course I wanted to read about it from your side. Congratulations! I've enjoyed your blog, I'm sad you're going home (months ago) and I hope you write more soon. You guys are a super cute couple, the kind of people I know I'd like to run into on my travels. (And yeah, I would have avoided those euros you met too) Thursday, November 30, 2006 | Rene' said... Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point. You clearly know what youre talking about, why waste your intelligence on just posting videos to your blog when you could be giving us something enlightening to read?
