We had planned to leave Medellin for Cali yesterday, but the night before we had been plagued by mosquitos so badly all night that there was no way we were getting up early. Those were the first mosquitos we've experienced in Colombia and we were a bit surprised, since it's been so chilly in Medellin. But it's also been rainy, so I guess that's where the mosquitos came from.

So last night we were careful to close the window and we set the alarm for 7:30. We got up at 8:30 and found that the fickle hot water tap had decided to bless us. There was hot water for Michael's whole shower and about half of mine. We went back to our usual spot for breakfast, Salon Versalles, where I ordered the desayuno completo con pescado. I can think of no better way to start the day than with a big plate of fried fish and tartar sauce.

We were a bit sad to leave the Hotel Plaza, as we always are when we've stayed in one spot for a few days and the people are friendly. The place had a serious roach problem, but they were the normal kind of roaches, the small ones who only come out at night and have the decency to flee if you switch on the light. Also I sometimes wondered, based on the suitcase-free young local couples who we only ever saw once, what kind of hotel it really was. But like I said, they were super nice to us. And we had cable. We didn't stay an extra night just to see American Idol, but it certainly was a plus.

We took a taxi to the bus station. At this point, we have pretty much agreed that taxis are the way to go if the bus station is not within walking distance. Two or three dollars split between the two of us is well worth saving the hassle of figuring out which wildly crowded bus full of staring commuters is the one that's going to take us where we want to go. There's time enough to experience the public transportation once our bags are at the hotel.

The bus station is also a centro commercial, a mall. But we ignored all that and went to the bus company windows. It can be a real pain to find what you need at a bus station in Colombia. There are always a multitude of different companies. Some go to Cali, and some don't. Of those that do, and if there's no sign listing destinations, you'll have to ask, none of them leave at the same times.

That's convenient if you miss one bus and want to take another, but it takes time to figure out which bus is leaving the soonest. And then each bus is a different price. Quality of busses seems to be about the same across the board (high), but you don't want any nasty surprises, so you have to ask about that too.

We found a bus that was leaving in fifteen minutes. Our fellow passengers included a young men's sports team. Maybe soccer, but their sweats didn't specify. We were assigned the very front seat behind the driver. There was a ton of leg room, but I was too suspicious to be happy just yet. If these seats were so choice, why were they still available just before departure? And why is there a sign above them saying that children under seven are not allowed to sit there?

The answer to that is that they are the death seats. I've read about South American bus drivers recklessly passing traffic on blind curves, and we've experienced Guatemalan busses, but nothing prepared me for the bus ride ahead of us.

The road wound and twisted, and shortly after we departed from Medellin, I decided to take a chewable Dramamine. I never thought I was prone to motion sickness, but the Mexico City-Oaxaca ride and the Moonlight Lady have convinced me that I'm not immune. It was daytime and I didn't want take the chance of having to vomit in front of the other passengers.

The view was incredible. We drove along ridges looking down into valleys of farmland and up into crinkled green mountains. But the real view was through the windshield. Due to the extreme curves, the two lane road always featured a double yellow line. Yet every single time we came up behind another vehicle, we would pass it. The driver was not totally reckless. I could tell he wasn't passing at just any old time. But still, all he needed was a good twenty yards to swerve into the other lane and speed up to pass whatever was in his way.

There were quite a few close calls when the driver skidded back into the correct lane just inches from an oncoming truck. I could only assume he knew what he was doing, but that was not much consolation when every ten minutes we whizzed by a homemade cross at the side of the road, presumably where someone had died.
Just when the Dramamine had really started to kick in, we stopped at a roadside restaurant that capitalized on the incredible view, with the whole back end open to the green valleys. Michael and I had the almuerzo del dia, fish soup for me and sancocho for him, followed by a massive plate of chicken, beans, rice, and plantains. It was pretty good, but way too much food.

I spent the rest of the trip in a Dramamine-induced doze, but I couldn't help but open my eyes each time our bus swerved violently. Usually I would open them to find our bus momentarily windshield to windshield with a truck or another bus. We weren't actually going that fast, but any speed seems fast enough when you're facing down a Mack truck. But after nine hours our bus arrived in Cali without a scratch. We hopped into a taxi and set off for our choice of lodgings, the Guest House Iguana.

Our driver knew the general area, but couldn't quite find the hostel, and we ended up driving past a trio of hookers about three times. Two of them ignored us, but the third struck a new and enticing pose every time we went by. When we finally found our hostel, after asking directions from a security guard, it turned out that it was right up the street from the hookers' spot. The neighborhood is otherwise very nice, and I like our room a lot.

We've been staying in so many concrete cubes that it's weird to be in a room with drywall and molding. The Iguana was formerly a private house, obviously for very rich people since it's huge and has a small pool (which is now empty.) They also have cold sodas, beer and Internet on the honor system. It can be really nice staying in a hostel, as opposed to a hotel.

Starving, we went out looking for food. Avenida Sexta (Sixth Avenue) is where it's all happening in this part of Cali. But it was not our scene at all, at least not after a nine hour bus ride. Giant open-air restaurants blasting bad music with a guy outside yelling about the drink specials were not what we were looking for. I don't know if we're getting old or what, but we want to be able to hear each other talk when we have dinner. Eventually we found a place on a side street called Rock Burger that turned out to be pretty good.

The hamburgers in Central America left a bit to be desired. My theory is that they are copied not from actual hamburgers, but from fast food hamburgers, hence the paper-thin patty. I'm not upset about it; the tacos in the US are copied from Taco Bell, and not from actual tacos. But upset or not, the fact remains the burgers were unsatisfying. So I approached Rock Burger warily. At least their music wasn't too loud.

The burgers were very good and came with a variety of unfamiliar but tasty sauces. I had a Colombiana soda to go with it. Colombiana is orange colored and tastes like a mix of bubble gum and cream soda. Good stuff, and our meal came to under five dollars. So far, so good, Cali.

gotta love "death seats" no matter what mode of transportation. they always make me a little more aware that i'm living on the edge. glad yall are doing well and that botero guy seemed to like big women so you know, gotta love that!

Colombiana is orange colored and tastes like a mix of bubble gum and cream soda Huh. INCA Cola in Peru tastes exactly the same (and I didn't care for it). I wonder if that bubble-gum taste is preferred in South America.

Yeah, they seem to love their carbonated hummingbird nectar down here. I have yet to taste the Inca cola, but I'm looking forward to it.
