Cochabamba, Bolivia - The Post-Overnight Bus Dilemma |

Tuesday, June 20, 2006 Sucre doesn't have a lot of "sights" per se, so we spent our time there just chilling and enjoying the city, especially its lovely central park and extensively stocked supermarkets. Yesterday we went to the post office, and the experience fell into the "eh - not too bad, considering" category. And then we collected our things from the hotel and took a taxi to the bus station. Michael had booked us on an overnight bus-cama to Cochabamba and we were very curious to see how Bolivia's bus-camas measure up to Peru's. The answer - not very well. Our bus was certainly decent, but there was something dreadfully wrong with the seatbacks. It actually made me kind of sad, because when I sat back in my seat I could tell that someone had tried very hard to make it comfortable, and failed miserably. While the majority of bus seat backs are just flat, this one was contoured, presumably to cradle me comfortingly and allow me to relax and fall asleep. Unfortunately, the contour was too narrow for me. (True, Bolivians are not known for their enormousness, but surely I am not wider than an average Bolivian man?) I felt like an electronic component being shoved into the wrong styrofoam cubby. Oh well. The leg room was glorious. We stopped twice, at 9:00 and 11:00 pm, for squat toilets, late dinners, and meat-on-a-stick at little concrete, towns clinging to the edge of the road. At some point the roads turned to dirt, but it was a sandy dirt, and the bus was sturdy and well filled, so it had no affect on comfort. This was another bus ride through country that is just plain dark. No street lights, no lighted highway signs, no town lights in the distance. Just the moon, the stars and whatever light seeps out through the driver's cabin. After ten hours and forty-five minutes, we arrived in Cochabamba at 6:15 in the morning, just as the city was growing pale and waking up. Michael and I stumbled numbly off the bus and found seats in the crowded bus station among locals wrapped in blankets against the chill morning until they looked like mounds of laundry on the benches. We took turns going to the bathroom. Admission tickets to the restroom cost one boliviano each. The ladies' room was a mass of chatter and long, black hair being combed, brushed, braided, and left in the sink. And then we sat in the seats again, in the waiting area, staring around us. Sometimes an overnight bus leaves us dull-eyed and unable to function. Luckily Cochabamba is not the most popular of tourist destinations, and there were no touts to take advantage of our stupor, so we sat. The bus station was pretty crowded for the time of day, and each of the narrow bus-station booths were plastered with large colored posters of busses gleaming down winding roads, and lists and lists of destinations. The bus chicas were just settling into their day, setting up and visiting with each other, still wrapped in multiple scarves. We looked at the Lonely Planet. We hadn't planned to stay in Cochabamba at all. We came here only because it's the place one goes in order to get to Villa Tunari, where we want to volunteer at an animal refuge. Last night when we were all full of energy and cheese empanadas, we'd talked about arriving in Cochabamba and heading straight over to where the minibusses stop, and plowing right through the next five hours. But now, in the reality of our exhaustion, we were at an impasse. "What do you think? Should we go to Villa Tunari today?" "I don't know. Do you want to?" "Well, do you want to?" "Why don't you just tell me what you want to do?" "Why don't you just tell me what you want to do?" "It's another five hours in a minibus, and you know our past experiences with minibusses." "Does that mean you don't want to go today?" "I don't know... do you want to go today?" It went on like that for at least half an hour. I'll spare you. The tough part was that I really could have gone either way. I was exhausted and tempted by the idea of being horizontal and not having an armrest in my ribs. On the other hand, I always feel really cool and traveler-y when we power through a long hop without stopping. In the end we decided not to go. I think we were both just happy that a decision was made. We looked at the map and decided that we were close enough to walk to Cochabamba's centro that we might as well just stay right by the bus station. We'll be leaving tomorrow, so no need to carry the bags far. So we went to the first hotel we saw, a large highrise and asked to see a room. We got a key for Room 128. We tried to take the stairs, but the boy at the desk told us to take the elevator. "Primero piso, si?" Michael confirmed. Sometimes he says obvious things just to practice his Spanish, which is good for his Spanish and in this case happened to actually be necessary because the boy told us no, no, the room is on the sixth floor. Room 128? Yes, sixth floor. I mean, do what you want, but when room 128 is not on the first floor, or the twelfth floor, or the hundred twenty-eighth floor, you should probably tell people that right away. Anyway the room was nice and had a neat balcony view of the amusement park adjacent to the bus station, but the florescent light was so depressing that I had to get out of there. The boy looked positively angry when we told him we "might come back." We ended up at the HI hostel, which was more like a hotel than a hostel, and had a room with wonderful natural light and warm lightbulbs for ninety bolivianos. Also nice sheets. It's always a bonus when we get non-threadbare sheets. So we saw a bit of Cochabamba today. It's nice enough, I guess. No hassles, just people doing their thing. Nothing obvious to do and not a lot of restaurant choices. But there are women who push around carts full of oranges with big metal juicers clamped on. For just a couple of bolivianos, they will squeeze you a cup of orange juice right then and there, and when you have finished the cup, they'll pour another gulp in it for good measure. Nice. So tomorrow - Villa Tunari and the wildlife refuge, Inti Wara Yassi. We are hoping to spend some time volunteering, hopefully with the monkeys.
