Sunday, November 6, 2005 This morning I was awakened by the sound of sand. Or at least, thats what it seemed like to my sleeping brain. I wondered why the sand was rustling so much and then it stopped and I fell back to sleep. Then it started up again and I woke up for real. Michael was out on the tiny balcony. It turned out that the sand was spectators applauding the beginning of some kind of race. At first it was just a few runners in orange t-shirts sprinting past, but soon the entire street was solid orange with people. They were coming from the zocalo and running the length of 5 de Mayo as far as we could see. I was very excited because every time I go to a parade or marathon or public festival, I always look up at the windows above and envy the people who live there and have such a great viewing spot. And this time it was me with the great viewing spot, and I only had to travel six thousand miles to get here. The line of runners went on for at least ten minutes. I expected the last participant to be someone older or someone on crutches or something, but it was a guy balancing a gold soccer ball on his face. Good luck with that. I was still sleepy and went back to bed, and Michael went out and investigated the event. It turned out to be a Nike 10k event, choose your own cause. He brought me back a hot chocolate and lots of photos. What a sweetheart. 0 comments so far | Post a comment
