Orange, CA, USA - This is it... |

Sunday, October 2, 2005 We took the world's most uneventful bus ride from San Francisco to Anaheim the other day. It was seriously a letdown of a Greyhound ride; I was counting on some drama to provide material. But everyone sat quietly in his or her seat and enjoyed the scenery. Oh well. Wait - I did fall asleep, become "floppyheaded" as Michael put it, and whack my eye into the upraised armrest. It's still sore, but no dramatic swelling or bruising, so no good pics. The LA bus station was seedy, but not in a noteworthy way. Then it was on to Orange County, where we have been kindly hosted by Brad's parents in their gorgeous and really interesting home. (See Michael's blog for photos.) The Walkers are really nice and took us out to what may be the last fancy meal we get for a while. Thanks Mr. and Mrs. Walker! Last night we went out with Brad and his new girlfriend, Gina, for a li'l taste of LA, via In and Out Burger and Del Taco and we also heard some bands at the Troubador. Michael has had an obsession with trying In and Out Burger ever since he read Fast Food Nation and I'm happy to say he was pleased with it. Gina and Babycakes - I mean, Brad - are in that adorable stage of a relationship where every time you look over at them they're trying to disprove the Pauli Exclusion Principle, but they were able to clue us in to the Secret Menu. Hint: ask for your burger "animal style." The LA area's freeways are like NYC's subways: just as you think they'll be and more. We got caught in a little traffic at 2:00 am. I mean, what? But it was fun. Thanks, Brad and Gina! So... this is it! This afternoon we're getting on a Greyhound bus to Tijuana. It wasn't my first choice, but when you have a year, you have time to find out if places are really as bad as all that. And if they are, you can just move on. And if they're not, you win! We plan to mosey on down along Baja after that and then head to Guadalajara for some Spanish classes, but I have never yet stuck to the original plan while traveling, so we'll see. Michael feels like these past two months have been a valid part of The Trip, and I agree they've been great, but for me The Trip starts when my passport gets fondled by someone other than me. It's like I've been winding around the line in the amusement park watching the ride swoop over my head and now the very next car coming down the track is going to be mine. Tonight we'll finally be sipping cervezas in Mexico. Thank you to everyone who has helped us get this far. HOURS ON THE BUS: 16 9 comments so far | Post a comment

If you're wondering - Animal style - means grilled onions, fried mustard (yes, fried mustard) and double sauce. You can also order grilled cheese, protien style (no bun - just lettuce), 3x3 (3 cheese, 3 meat) and 4x4 (4 cheese, 4 meat). The best thing about In-N-Out are the shakes. Make sure to swing through Houston on your way back up to NJ. Sunday, October 2, 2005 | Mike said... Glad we could be your last stop before getting into the excitement of your adventure - although it sounds like you've already had a book full of stories to tell. When you're trying to decide if your stomach can handle the food, remember it survived an In & Out burger "animal style". If you get to Antarctica, say hi to the penguins and whales for me.
